What Are Single Use Plastics?

Single-use plastics are plastic items that are used once and then thrown away

Plastic bags, Plastic cutlery, Plastic straws, Beverage containers, Food containers, Coffee stirrers, and Water and soda bottles. Single-use plastics are made from fossil fuel-based chemicals and are often used for packaging and serviceware.

They can be a challenge because:

  • Plastic takes centuries to break down
  • They can pollute the environment
  • They are more likely to end up in the ocean than reusable options
  • Their production exacerbates problems like climate change and biodiversity loss
  • They can lead to health problems like asthma and cancer in people
